Grants available to apprentices registered in a skilled trade training program

Gatineau, QC – To encourage young Canadians to pursue a career in the skilled trades, the Government of Canada is offering grants to apprentices registered in designated Red Seal trades to help them complete their training and become certified journeypersons. Two types of apprenticeship grants are available:

The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant offers apprentices a $1,000 cash grant when they complete the first and/or second level of their apprenticeship program in a designated Red Seal trade (up to a maximum of $2,000).

The Apprenticeship Completion Grant offers an additional $2,000 to apprentices who complete their training and become a certified journeyperson in a designated Red Seal trade.

The apprenticeship grants are broader than many student loans or scholarships. They can be used to pay not only for tuition, but also for tools and other expenses.

For example, Jason Langlois, an apprentice who completed his training earlier this year, received $4,000 in apprenticeship grants. They helped offset the cost of his training and provided him with the funds to buy the tools he needed and to start his own business. “The grants have helped create a stable foundation for me to be able to provide for my family,” he says.

Detailed information on the apprenticeship grants, along with application forms, is available at www.servicecanada.gc.ca/apprenticeship or by calling 1-866-742-3644.

The Apprenticeship Completion Grant is part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
