The Mining Association of Canada recognizes excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility during annual Mining Day on the Hill event

November 23, 2010 @ 07:00AM

Ottawa, ON - During its annual Mining Day on the Hill, The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) will be presenting the 2009 Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Awards, recognizing Canadians facilities that have demonstrated excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) is an initiative developed by The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) to improve the industry’s performance by aligning its actions with the priorities and values of Canadians. TSM provides a way of finding common ground with communities of interest in order to build a better mining industry, today and in the future.

Participation in TSM is a condition of membership in The Mining Association of Canada (MAC), it requires members to subscribe to a set of guiding principles that are backed by specific performance indicators against which member companies must report annually.

TSM Awards are presented each year to MAC member companies that have had externally verified results that demonstrate excellence in one of the following categories:

  • Energy use and GHG emissions
  • External outreach
  • Tailings management
  • Crisis management planning

TSM Award recipients include the following companies: Hudbay Minerals, Shell Canada Energy, Iron Ore Company of Canada, Teck Resources, Suncor Energy and Vale Inco.

As sustainable development initiatives continue to evolve, MAC’s award winning TSM program has already earned a leading position within the CSR arena, and forges ahead in its efforts to maximize mining’s contributions to society while minimizing environmental impacts.
