Peter Silverstone

Peter Silverstone has a diverse background with multiple interests. He is a physician, professor, academic, and businessman.

He qualified from medical school in London, England at the age of 22. He then spent several years working in many different specialties, including cardiology, infectious diseases, and neurosurgery, before deciding to specialize in psychiatry. He has continued to work as a physician for over 25 years, while doing several other activities.

He was promoted to a position of Full Professor at the University of Alberta before he was 40-years old. This was based upon the high quality of the medical research he carried out in many areas, including mood disorders, new drug development, the role of self-esteem, and studying brain changes utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) among other advanced techniques.

As an academic researcher he has published 100 peer-reviewed articles in a variety of medical journals. He has also taught widely, and has been invited to present at over 100 international meetings. He has been awarded research funding by multiple bodies in both Canada and the United States, including the Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR). He has been continuously funded by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) for 15 years and is currently a Senior Scholar.

As a businessman, and with the full support of the University of Alberta, he has developed Alberta-based companies involved in developing new medications. These operated throughout North and South America, and grew to more than 50 employees. More recently, he took a 2-year leave of absence to work as Senior Vice-President, Medical and Scientific Affairs for Biovail corporation, Canada’s largest pharmaceutical company, before returning to the University of Alberta in 2008.

Currently, he is also on the Board of Edmonton Economic Development Corporation.
