4th Annual Mustaches for Kids Sweetest 'Stache Competition

Pageant-style Event Brings Together 75 Mustache-Growing Men to Help Raise Money for Kids

November 17, 2008 @ 03:00PM

Is there a Tom Selleck casting call in town? Is it "Dress like Richard Petty Day"? Do I keep seeing Mike Ditka everywhere? No. It's just regular citizens of Ottawa who are gathering to celebrate the end of another successful mustache growing season at the 4th annual "Sweetest 'Stache" competition of Mustaches for Kids Ottawa to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern Ontario.

The competition will be held on Friday, December 5th, 2008 and marks the final day of the 2008 Mustaches for Kids Ottawa growing season. The festivities will commence at 7 PM at Zaphod Beeblebrox at 27 York Street in the Byward Market.

The annual five-week campaign enlists "Growers" to sprout sweet, sweet mustaches. Follicular growth is governed by the strict Mustaches for Kids rules: Growers must shave their faces, except for the mustache, a minimum of one time per week while soliciting donations from friends, family, co-workers, and people in the community.  Kind of like getting pledges to run a marathon, but without the exertion, cramping, or dehydration. It's like a facial hair marathon.

The "Sweetest ‘Stache" competition is a cross between a beauty pageant, a dog show, and a police line-up where costumed Growers participate in a range of contests and challenges designed to test mustache sweetness so that one lucky individual may be awarded the title of "Sweetest ‘Stache". The grueling competition asks audience members and judges to grade Grower personality, mustache persona, hair follicle strength, beer foam retention (and a few other qualitative criteria) to arrive at an overall "sweetness" score.  The evening will culminate with one champion being crowned "Sweetest 'Stache 2008" by the 2007 champion Trevor "Cliff Clavin" Kealey but the real satisfaction comes from the knowledge that children's lives have been enriched by the generous donations made. Truly, the power of a mustache knows no bounds.

Mustaches for Kids is a North American volunteer-run organization, started in Los Angeles in 1999, to do good and have fun by encouraging participants to grow mustaches and collect pledges in support of children's charities. Since its inception, Mustaches for Kids has enlisted the efforts of hundreds of brave "Growers" who, collectively, have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local, national and international charities such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, DonorsChoose.org, and the Children's Hospital of New Orleans. This year marks the fourth growing season in Ottawa and in the first three years over $25,000 has been raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern Ontario.
