The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada expands its Success Stories video series #gov20

Eight new video clips can now be viewed on FCAC’s website

June 29, 2010 @ 12:30PM

OTTAWA - Today, The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) is proud to launch eight new video clips in its Success Stories series. The eight video clips feature ten Canadians who share how FCAC’s tools have helped them sharpen their financial knowledge and skills. The video clips are each approximately four minutes long and they will be added to the series of nine video clips that FCAC produced last year.

“The testimonials we gathered last year really helped us show, in a concrete manner, how consumers can use our publications and interactive tools in their daily lives. However, there were a number of important issues that still had to be addressed, particularly questions about mortgages, fraud and savings,” explains Ursula Menke, FCAC Commissioner. “We are very happy to be able to offer today a more complete overview of the different tools available, and especially to let consumers themselves explain how they use these tools and how they benefit from them.”

One of the testimonials gathered this year is that of Rodney Noriega, a recent graduate of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. Rodney admits that he incurred a lot of debt while in university, especially as a result of his student loans. He explains how he uses FCAC’s tools to reduce his debt load and he invites all students to become better informed before signing credit card or cell phone contracts, for example.

Mélanie Boulet is a Grade 2 teacher at École élémentaire catholique de la Découverte in Ottawa, Ontario. She explains how FCAC’s tip sheets helped her in opening a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). “I found the answers to many of my questions on the site — for example, am I allowed to negotiate or not? And I was very happy to find out that I could,” she explains.

Laurin Jeffrey, a real estate agent in Toronto, Ontario, uses FCAC tools to add value to the services he gives to clients who are looking to buy a home. “When a couple first comes to see me, a lot of them look to me for advice on how to even begin the financial end of things. How to find a mortgage? How much should they be looking to get? What kind of down payment do they need? What is it going to mean for a monthly payment?” he explains. “I really like the Financial Consumer Agency’s tools because it is a good independent source to give to people.”

Students Isabelle Coleman, Nicholas Smith, Trevor Yerxa and Vincent Auffrey from Mathieu-Martin and Riverview High Schools in New Brunswick share their appreciation for the educational resource, The City. After using this resource in class, they will teach their classmates what they learned in order to make the learning process even easier. “Students will listen to another student quicker than they will a teacher because it is one of their peers that has realized something. They will kind of clue in with it,” says Trevor. “I definitely think all students should be going through this course at school because it will help them with the future,” he explains. Nicholas adds “Yes, I will definitely use this later on in life.”

The new video clips include the testimonials of Brian Smith, employment counsellor at Carrefour jeunesse-emploi Côte-des-Neiges in Montréal, Quebec; Ashley Reid, a young accountant in Canmore, Alberta; and Ken MacDonald, crime prevention coordinator with the New Glasgow Police Service in Nova Scotia. In their success stories, each discusses how FCAC has helped them in their daily activities, such as taking out mortgage loans, choosing a credit card, opening a bank account or preventing fraud.

FCAC’s Success Stories are available on the Agency’s website at www.fcac.gc.ca. For an overview of all the testimonials and topics covered, consult the preview for the video series available on the website’s home page.
