Now Broadcasting Live: Astral Media Hosts Largest One-Day Caring for Kids Radiothon Event

April 30, 2009 @ 06:45AM

Montréal, April 30, 2009

Fifty radio stations in 28 cities across Canada are broadcasting heartfelt stories of courage and compassion today, as part of the Astral Media National Day of Caring for Kids Radiothon.

The proceeds raised by millions of listeners from all regions of the country will benefit 20 children’s hospitals and health care facilities to affect positive change in the lives of children in need of medical care.

On-air talent from participating stations in eight provinces are live at partner hospitals and health care facilities throughout the day to provide access to those who directly benefit from these funds. Special guests, ranging from hospital staff, to child patients and their parents take to the airwaves to share their personal stories and show Canadians just how they can make a real difference by donating.

A media invitation was issued Wednesday listing all public events held today by radio stations across the country.

Canadians can make a donation now by visiting the website of any broadcasting radio station in their hometown or by clicking on one of the hyperlinks to the right.

In many cities, stations are working closely with Children’s Miracle Network – an international non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of kids by raising funds for children’s hospitals and health foundations.

All day, the Astral Media radiothon’s microsite features a rolling total of dollars raised. National results will be announced on Monday, May 4th. Send us an e-mail to receive a personal notification.

A Flickr webpage will also feature pictures stamped with emotion added throughout the day from across the country.

Quotes

“From coast-to-coast, our stations and our employees are mobilizing communities to help sick children and hospitals get the care and the facilities they need. Nearly 500 of our employees have been working tirelessly for months to make this event a unique fundraising success. We challenge Canadians in all regions to tune in to their favourite radio station and give in order to help these hospitals purchase equipment and allocate resources to provide the best medical care to their littlest patients.”

Jacques Parisien, Group President, Astral Media Radio and Outdoor

“Every year, one in four children in Canada will visit a children's hospital. On the National Day of Caring for Kids, listeners across the country will get the opportunity to hear some of these extraordinary stories – and gain a better understanding as to why continued support of our children’s hospitals is so crucial to our communities.”

John Hartman, Chief International Officer for Children’s Miracle Network

Here is an example of incredible generosity we are witnessing. Toronto’s Newstalk 1010 CFRB morning man Bill Carroll, in his Power Hour from 8 to 9 AM alone, was successful in attracting an AMAZING 525 new Miracle Club Members – people who are committing to donations of $18 per month! Here's why today is important. This morning, only two hours into Radiothon, we thought we might not be able to go on. We talked to Yolaine, the mother of 7 month old Ella - who passed away only five weeks ago.

The story was heartbreaking -and uplifitng at the same time. Heartbreaking, because Ella spent all of her short life in BC Children's Hospital,.Uplfiting, because she never knew she was sick. Being at BC Children's Hospital allowed her family to be with her 24 hours a day - and to provide respite when it was all too much.

Ella passed away March 27th in the arms of her mother, Yolaine. Yolaine told us her story today - to make sure the work of BC Children`s Hospital continues.

What an incredible day ... a day of tears, laughter, stories and songs (including CFRB's John Moore doing a duet with SickKids patient Madison Scott). Astral Media Toronto stations Newstalk 1010 CFRB, 97.3 EZ Rock and VIrgin Radio 999 thank their generous listeners for raising $3,121,760 for The Hospital for Sick Children. We couldn't help this world-class institution change the lives of sick kids without the loyal support of the amazing people who listen to us. Many thanks to the families, volunteers and staff at the hospital who help us tell the incredible stories. As well as to all the staff of the radio stations who help make the magic in front of the mic and behind the scenes.
